Lesson 2 — Note values

Notes, rests, dots, octaves and accidentals

Braille notes are letters you already know. d e f g h i j are C D E F G A B as eighth notes (quavers). To change the value you add the lower dots, following the same logic as the series of the alphabet: +6 quarter notes (crotchets), +3 half notes (minims), +3 6 whole notes (semibreves). Rests have four cells of their own, one for each value. Press the keys to find the symbol in the table, or click a symbol to see it in the large cell.

Current cell

sdot 3ddot 2fdot 1 jdot 4kdot 5ldot 6

The matching symbol lights up in the table.
SPACE or BACKSPACE clears the cell.

The meaning depends on the context. The same cell d (dots 1 4 5) is the letter d in a text, the digit 4 after the numeric indicator, and C eighth note in music. Each value also stands for a smaller one (eighth or 128th, quarter or 64th, half or 32nd, whole or 16th): the measure tells you which.

Write freely: the page recognizes what you have written, draws it on the staff and plays it back to you. Remember the rule: the first note always has an octave mark; after that, no mark within a third, for a fourth or fifth only if the octave changes, always from a sixth upwards. The page flags this for you in orange.
